Google Now Tracks Your Instagram and TikTok Posts in Search Console: What Windsor Businesses Should Do
Google rolled out a feature this month that a lot of Windsor-Essex business owners are going to care about once they hear about it. Search Console, the free tool Google uses to show site owners how their pages perform in search, now works for social accounts too. If you post on Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube, you can connect that account directly and see how your posts show up in Google Search and Discover, complete with clicks, impressions, and which posts are actually pulling traffic.
Why this matters even if you don't have a website
Here's the part that stands out. This is the first time Search Console can be verified without owning a domain. A lot of small operators in this region run their entire online presence off an Instagram page and a Google Business Profile, and they've never had a way to know whether Google is picking up that content in search results. Now they do. A bakery posting daily specials on Instagram, a barber showing haircuts on TikTok, a boutique doing outfit reels: all of that content can now be tracked for search visibility the same way a blog post would be.
What you actually get in the report
Once you connect a platform, Search Console gives you two things worth paying attention to. The Performance report breaks down total clicks and impressions and lets you filter by post or by search query, so you can see exactly what people typed to find your content. The Insights report gives a faster read on recent trends: what's trending up, which posts are carrying the account, and how people are discovering you through Google in the first place.
What to do about it this week
Set it up. It takes a few minutes and the verification is handled through the platform itself, not through a website you'd need to build. Once it's connected, watch it for a couple of weeks before drawing conclusions. Look specifically for two things: which posts show up for search terms your customers actually use (not just hashtags), and whether posts with your business name, neighbourhood, or service clearly stated in the caption outperform ones without that context. Windsor businesses that get specific in their captions, mentioning the actual street, the actual service, the actual product, tend to show up for more of the searches that matter.
This also changes how you should think about captions going forward. If Google is now indexing and reporting on social posts as searchable content, then a caption that just says "new drop 🔥" is giving up ground to a caption that says what the product is, who it's for, and where to get it in Windsor. Treat your captions a little more like you'd treat a page title.
The bottom line
Google just handed small businesses a free window into how their social content performs in search, without requiring a website first. If your business lives on Instagram or TikTok, this is worth ten minutes of setup and a recurring check-in. It's one more place customers are finding you, and now it's one more place you can actually measure.
